Ghiya with Chana Dal (bottle gourd with split chickpeas)

Ghiya is a commonly available vegetable in Indian markets whose English name is Bottle Gourd. It has a pale green skin and the flesh is white. This recipe is on demand from my friend, Rashmi 🙂

Ingredients

  • 1 medium bottle gourd/ ghiya
  • 1/2 cup yellow split chick pea
  • 2 tablespoon oil
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • A pinch of asafetida (hing)
  • 2 whole red chilies
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt adjust to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garam masala
  •  chopped cilantro
  • 2 cup of water

Cooking Directions

Wash and soak chana dal, by that time, peel and cut bottle gourd into small peices.

Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the cumin seeds as they crack add asafetida, and whole red chilies stir for few seconds.Next add ginger, turmeric, and chili powder and stir for few seconds.

Add chana dal, ghiya, salt and 2cup of water. Cook till dal gets fully done.

Garnish the dal (lentil) with chopped cilantro and serve it with roti/ chappati/ rice
